Case Studies in Graphitic Corrosion of Cast Iron Pipe

نویسندگان

چکیده

Throughout many parts of the world, cast iron pipe has been and continues to be used for utility piping (water sewage) gaseous media piping. Gray is known have a limited life in service but often left place beyond its reasonable life. Therefore, end then defined as rupture or crack subsequent leak, at an unpleasant time with results. The controlling mechanism involved dependent graphitic corrosion. This paper provides review phenomenon corrosion form key characteristics. Several references are cited that further explore prevention/mitigation. Two case studies presented gray from failure analysis point-of-view. Both feature conditions aid interpretation appreciation when how this occurs.

Three dimensional mapping of corrosion pits in cast iron pipe using the remote field effect

The remote field effect is an electromagnetic method for inspecting pipes and tubing. It has recently been commercialised as a technique for inspecting gray cast iron and ductile iron water mains. However, commercial tools provide information on pits depths in the pipe and overall wall loss. Models of the mechanical behaviour of cast iron pipe also require information on pit width and length. T...

Gray cast-iron water pipe metallurgy

The results of a metallographic study of grey cast iron water pipes are reported. These pipes had been installed between 1885 and 1973 in eight different water systems. Each pipe had been extracted during scheduled maintenance or failure repairs to provide data for a larger study to produce a methodology for determining the residual life of grey cast iron pipes. This metallographic study was co...

Failure modes and mechanisms in gray cast iron pipe

Failures in cast iron water mains are more complex and diverse than is widely understood in the industry. This paper discusses the modes and causes of pipe failures that have been encountered during a three year investigation by the National Research Council Canada. In addition to corrosion, manufacturing defects, human error and unexpected levels of pipe loading all play a role in the large nu...

The importance of temperature in assessing iron pipe corrosion in water distribution systems.

Temperature is expected to play a significant role in the corrosion of iron pipes in drinking water distribution systems. Temperature impacts many parameters that are critical to pipe corrosion including biological activity, physical properties of the solution, thermodynamic and physical properties of corrosion scale, and chemical rates. Moreover, variations in temperature and temperature gradi...

Corrosion Behavior of Cast Iron in Freely Aerated Stagnant Arabian Gulf Seawater

In this work, the results obtained from studying the corrosion of cast iron in freely aerated stagnant Arabian Gulf seawater (AGS) at room temperature were reported. The study was carried out using weight-loss (WL), cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP), open-circuit potential (OCP), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements and complemented by scanning electron microsco...
